Building the Future of Georgetown

The Purple Heart Trail is enjoyed by many, as it is in a central location and walks along the beautiful San Gabriel River. Built by Georgetown Trails Foundation, this trail serves as a refuge for mountain bikers and dog walkers alike. However, due to many recent sudden freezes, storms, and its location near commercial real estate, the trail was littered with garbage, fallen tree leaves, and invasive foliage.

To combat this problem, The Nature Foundation paired up with the original builders, Georgetown Trails Foundation. We gathered many volunteers, and spent Earth Day picking up trash, sawing fallen tree branches that blocked paths, and removing invasive species along the walkways. The day started by planting the new trail sign and picking up the bulk of trash right next to the businesses nearby. Next we all hiked to the a river overlook to check if any new trees had fallen, and if there were any rocks large enough to de-rail a bike. Finally, we cleared brush on a second part of the trail and dug up weeds which were sharp enough to cause harm to an unknowing hiker.

Keep your eye out for the next opportunity to volunteer with The Nature Foundation!
