Living in a tree for 2 years

Julia Butterfly Hill is an environmental activist who lived in a 180-foot redwood tree for two years in order to protect it from being cut down. Hill's activism began in 1997 when she decided to climb the tree in an effort to save it from logging. She named the tree "Luna" and it became her home for the next two years. The tree was over 1,000 years old, and had been struck by lightning at one point.

Hill was inspired to take her stand after attending a protest rally in Northern California, where she heard a speech from an environmental activist who had chained herself to a bulldozer in order to protect a grove of old-growth redwoods. Hill felt compelled to do something similar and climbed the 180-foot redwood tree in an effort to protect it from being logged.

It was a long and difficult process for Hill and she was often subjected to criticism from the logging company and from some members of the public. She was frequently harassed by helicopters and even the weather: During her stay freezing rain and dangerous winds from El Nino took place during her stay. Despite the difficulties, Hill remained committed to her cause and refused to come down from the tree. She even managed to gain the support of several celebrities, including John Denver and Woody Harrelson, who both visited her in the tree.

Finally, in 1999, Hill reached an agreement with the Pacific Lumber Company and was allowed to leave the tree in exchange for a conservation agreement. The agreement included a 740-acre conservation area and a ban on logging old-growth redwoods. Today, Hill is still a passionate environmental activist and her story is an inspiring example of the power of one person’s dedication and commitment to a cause. Her experience in the tree has continued to inspire people around the world and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our natural environment.
