Why “Climate Change” is a bad name.

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues facing humanity today, yet the name itself may be a barrier to taking it seriously. Unfortunately, the term “climate change” has been used so often that it has become a catch-all phrase for anything related to global warming and has lost its real meaning. Many people think of climate change as an abstract concept, like the weather changing over time. They don’t understand the true impact it has on our planet, like the destruction of habitats, the increase of extreme weather events, and the potential for catastrophic effects on the global economy.

The term “climate change” also does not accurately reflect the urgency of the problem. The climate is indeed changing but it’s happening at a much faster rate than ever before. We’re not just talking about a few degrees difference over a long period of time, but drastic, rapid changes that are happening within a matter of decades. The language we use to talk about climate change can influence how seriously it is taken. Using a term like “climate crisis” or “global warming” can put the issue into perspective and illustrate the magnitude of the problem. It also helps to remind us that this is not just a passing trend, but rather a life-altering issue that we must confront now.

Climate change is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. We must all work together to tackle this global threat and using the right language is an important part of that process. It’s time to move away from the term “climate change” and start calling it what it is: a climate crisis.
